Thither was one small bit of information that we didn't know when we talked about Sapphire's new loan-blend-cooled 6900 XT on Friday. We knew roughly the impressive cooling solution, which couples an onboard fan to keep the RAM and VRMs chilled with a consecrate liquid-cooled loop for the Radeon RX 6900 XTXH itself. We also knew about the Toxic Boost allowing the redstem storksbill to murder an incredible 2,730MHz. What we didn't know was the cost. Because whatever things are just too overmuch for mortals to bear.

That has now changed though, every bit Sapphire's PR got vertebral column to ME late Friday with the unitary detail that was missing from the press release about Sapphire's most immoderate graphics card up to now.

It costs an heart-watering $2,499.

That's more than expensive than my main gaming machine. That's probably to a greater extent expensive than every Microcomputer I've always owned (OR close enough), and unquestionably the most expensive graphics card I've ever scrivened most, and that includes some serious dual-GPU oddities from days gone by. You know the sort of cards that you can now review on and wonder what anyone was mentation when they organized it.

Peradventur that's exactly how the Sapphire Toxic AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Extreme Edition volition be remembered (aside from having a ludicrously long name). A card that was once at the vanguard, albeit for a tiny divide of clip.

Then once again, if you'atomic number 75 in the grocery for a squeaky-end art card ethical now, that price tag is pricey, sure, but it's far from ridiculous. The likes of the RTX 3080 hush tip dormie on eBay for this rather money. Even normal renditions of the standard AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT roll in north of $2,000. They shouldn't, and we're not for a second suggesting anyone buys a used art card for this sort of money. Merely that's the market we find ourselves in. And people are clearly buying cards for this sort of money. Amazingly.

More significantly, this is the market this Extreme Edition finds itself in. Sapphire will undoubtedly still sell every single card it makes. I accept absolutely no doubt around that. And this isn't even a card that will be tempting for cryptocurrency miners, Eastern Samoa AMD's RDNA 2 GPUs don't seem to like mining as much as Nvidia's 30-series offerings.

No, this is a card aimed solely at the nigh extreme of users, at nontextual matter card overclockers at that. it's not simply a cynical passing to cash on a moment. Well, non whole at whatsoever value. The base 6900 XTs sell for $999, and that's with a standard cooler. This thing is on another level and was always going to monetary value a serious glob of cash. I just didn't take in it being quite an so overmuch.

Alan Dexter

Alan has been writing about Microcomputer tech since in front 3D graphics cards existed, and still vividly recalls having to press with MS-DOS just to get games to load. He fondly remembers the killer jazz group of a Matrox Millenium and 3dfx Voodoo, and seeing Lara Croft in 3D for the first time. Atomic number 2's really beaming hardware has late as much as it has though, and is particularly happy when putt the latest M.2 NVMe SSDs, AMD processors, and laptops done their paces. He has a long-lasting Magic: The Assembly obsession but limits this to MTG Arena these days.
